Lunchtime Art Break at the Asheville Art Museum

The Museum presents Lunchtime Art Breaks, a series of gallery talks and presentations designed to inform and engage you in dialogue with members of our curatorial and education departments, docents and special guests.

Asheville's Bow-Wowhaus this Saturday

In Asheville,  the influence of art is everywhere - including Fido's home-sweet-home. 

 

The Asheville Section of the American Institute of Architects has created The Asheville Bow-Wowhaus, a project involving about dozen area AIA Asheville Members and other professionals to create one-of-a-kind dog houses. The creations, now on display at Aloft Asheville Downtown hotel, will be auctioned for at a gala party and fundraiser at the Asheville Art Museum on Saturday, November 10. Tickets for the event are $37.

More than ten Asheville architects have participated in the event. “The doghouses are each so different and unique”, says Mary Fierle, AIA Asheville Executive Assistant. “There is a home appropriate for a teacup Chihuahua to a Rhodesian Ridgeback, and every kind of mutt in between!” 

Some of the houses have been designed for indoor use, others are made for use in the yard. Many of the architects collaborated with businesses and craftsmen including carpenters, interior designers, a metal worker, faux finisher, technology expert, a jewelry designer and others. Materials used in the doghouses range from recycled cherry slats, stucco, MDF, Plexiglas, beer cans, and an old surfboard.  

Asheville Urban Loft Tour and "Art for Art's Sake" Reception

October 11, 4:30 - 9:30 PM: Asheville Urban Loft Tour benefit for the Asheville Art Museum. Tour some of Asheville's most stunning downtown lofts, filled with original art and upscale furnishings and help support the Asheville Art Museum.

The Tour is followed by a reception, "Art for Art's Sake",  6 PM - 9:30 PM, hosted by the Cotton Mill Studios.  For tickets check in at the Art Museum's front desk or call 828-253-3227.  Artists of The Historic Cotton Mill Studios, located in the River Arts District at 122 Riverside Drive, are generously hosting a reception following the Urban Loft and Art Tour. 40% of art sales during the reception directly benefit the continued growth of the Asheville Art Museum and its capital campaign, Art WORKS for Asheville.  Free admission; participation on the Tour not required to attend reception.

Transportation to the Reception:  The event sponsor, the White Trolley Line (Asheville's Historic White Trolley Tours), will shuttle guests from the final stop on the walking tour to the benefit reception at The Historic Cotton Mill Studios, and back to the Museum throughout the evening.

Film Screening and Filmaker Q&A at the Asheville Art Museum

July 15, 2 PM at the Asheville Art Museum, 2 S Pack Square in Asheville NC.  The Museum hosts a special Film Screening and Filmmaker Q&A for "Sick-Amour". Filmed over the course of five years, the movie chronicles multimedia artist Joel Tauber's five-year love affair with a once-beautiful sycamore tree in the parking lot of the Pasadena Rose Bowl, and his quest to revive and protect the tree.

The Los Angeles Times describes the film stating that "[Tauber's] obsession functions as a sort of spotlight, illuminating, through a tree, our dysfunctional relationship with nature".

Tauber lives and works in Winston-Salem, NC, where he is Assistant Professor of Art in New Media at Wake Forest University. Join us for a question and answer session with Joel Tauber after this screening.

The Big Crafty this Sunday at The Asheville Art Museum

July 8 The Big Crafty The Big Crafty returns to the Asheville Art Museum. The event celebrates and showcases the fine wares of over 100 independent indie crafters, artists and makers. The complete line up of participating artists is now available online. This is a free, family-friendly event.

In addition to the Craft Event, be sure to browse the Museum's many current exhibits. Stop by the Family Art pARTy from 1 PM to 4 PM offering Hands-on art activities for all ages.

Asheville Art Museum Hosts Fine Art Print Fair

June 22-24   Fine Art Print Fair  Hosted by the Asheville Art Museum the Fair will showcase dealers from around the United States and will appeal to both beginning collectors as well as more seasoned ones. Dealers will offer something for every taste or budget, from old master prints to contemporary photographs. A Preview Reception: Friday June 22, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. ($35 Museum Members,  $45 non-Members)
